Is Your Elderly Parent Always At The Dentist? It May Be Time For Dentures
ShareIf you are constantly making your elderly parent dental appointments and it's getting near impossible to keep up with all the dentistry problems they're having, it may be time to consider dentures. If they had several teeth pulled and several others are rotting, talk with their dentist to see if your parent would be a good candidate to get dentures.
Dentures are permanent teeth that they can wear throughout the day to replace their naturally teeth that are breaking down. Here are a few of the reasons you want to consider this option for your parent, and how it will be easier for yourself.
Fewer Appointments
Once the teeth are removed and the full set of dentures are created, your parent will no longer need to go to the regular dentist for appointments throughout the year, and instead they will just need to see their denturist to make sure the dentures are aligned properly. This means less trips for you to get your parent to their dental appointments.
No More Dental Work on the Teeth
You aren't going to worry about cavities, root canals, broken teeth and bacteria in the mouth once you make the switch to dentures. The fake teeth are often composed of porcelain and the porcelain isn't going to get damaged like regular teeth. Since all the teeth are removed, your parent will just need to brush the gums. If there are tissue problems they could need deep tissue cleanings annually.
Easy Maintenance
The dentures are super easy to care for. Your parent just has to remove them and soak them in cleaner at the end of the night, and then they reapply them to the gums in the morning. They can brush their gums at night and before they put the dentures back in during the morning, and rinse like they normally would with mouthwash. They won't have to worry about flossing at all.
Improving their oral health can also improve their overall health if they were having a lot of mouth infections, or if they were dealing with a lot of periodontal disease around the teeth. Ask your parent if this was something that they would want to do to make eating and talking easier for them and this would also improve the look of their smile at the same time. If your parent agrees, you'll want to make an appointment with a denturist to get them fitted and to schedule the extraction of their original teeth.
