Hi! My name is Addy Reed. I’m 57 years old and have been neglectful about going to the dentist. Last month was my first dentist visit in six years. I had always been diligent about twice a year cleanings and checkups, but time got away from me until one of my crowns came out. As we age, the dental work from years past tends to do that. When you neglect to visit the dentist on a regular basis, the list of things that need to be done may grow; at least this was my experience. I left the dentist office with an extensive list of things I needed to have done. The office staff was very kind. They are working with me to set up a plan. A dental crown can smooth a roughened tooth.

When a tooth becomes damaged, the contours of the tooth can become sharp, rough or uneven. When a dental crown is placed, the contours of the crown are smooth. Thus, the soft tissues of your mouth are protected from the rough or sharp edges of the damaged tooth.

A dental crown can fortify a tooth.

When a dental crown is placed, it fortifies the integrity of the underlying tooth. A crack or chip in a tooth can start to extend or worsen as the tooth is exposed to regular amounts of bite pressure. Once the tooth is divided through its root, no dental repairs can be performed to save it. It will have to be extracted.

A dental crown can be used to protect a filling.

Sometimes a filling that has been applied to a tooth can be quite substantial. For instance, if a tooth is filled after a root canal, there may be little natural tooth material left. Without a dental crown, the tooth may crumble under the bite force needed to chew your food.

Large fillings are often applied after a significant amount of decay has been removed from a tooth. Although the filling is usually made of a hard material, such as composite bonding material, it is not usually hard enough to protect the tooth from further damage.

Dental crowns are made of many different hard materials. Some crowns are made of metal alloy, stainless steel or gold. Other crowns may be fabricated from porcelain-over-metal, porcelain or resin.

A dental implant is installed to replace a missing tooth. The implant is positioned inside the jawbone of the patient and replaces the lost tooth root. Even though a dental implant has healed properly in position, your ability to chew is not restored until a dental crown is placed.
