If you have lost a filling and are unsure of what there is a way to temporarily cover the tooth until you are able to see your family dentist. Here are a few things to know about temporarily replacing a dental filling on your own.

Buy A Temporary Filling Kit

There are repair kits that you can find at your local pharmacy that will help you cover up your exposed tooth. They have all of the materials and tools that you need to temporarily cover several teeth, so it may be good to have on hand for the day that you need it. You will find that these kits have a material that is similar to what dentists use for temporary fillings, and even contain ingredients that help relieve tooth-related pain.

Use The Right Tools For The Job

The kit that you purchase will have a special tool used for applying and packing the tooth. You will use one end to scoop out the replacement material, while the ball end is used to pack it into the tooth. In addition, you will want to grab some other things you already have around the house to help make using the kit a bit easier. It will help to have a toothpick, tweezers, a cotton ball, and dental floss.

Clean And Dry The Tooth

It's very important that you clean the tooth that you will be placing the temporary filling material over. It will help to use dental floss if you have a filling that went between your teeth, and a toothpick to help get out any food particles in a filling that was placed along the tooth's crown. You can then rip off part of the cotton ball and roll it into a smaller ball. The tweezers can be used to grab the small cotton ball and wipe down your tooth so that it is completely dry.

Apply The Temporary Filling

Roll the temporary filling material into a small ball and place it into the tooth. Use the tool that came with your kit to pack it down deep into the tooth. If the ball of filling material doesn't fill in the cavity, roll up another ball to continue filling it in. That temporary filling material will take a couple of hours for it to completely dry, so make sure not to eat or drink anything during that time.
