Keeping your teeth their whitest can help you feel attractive and confident. However, each time that you eat, the pigments from the food and drink that you consume may be staining your teeth. Foods, such as deeply colored berries, and drinks, such as coffee and tea, can eventually darken the color of your teeth.

Teeth that were once pearly white may become dingy, yellow or even brown. Nevertheless, teeth often respond to whitening applications. There are even some natural ways to lighten the color of your teeth. Here are a few:

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is the antiseptic solution that is available at many drugstores or grocery stores. It is usually contained in a dark bottle because of the liquid's rapid degradation in light. Hydrogen peroxide readily releases oxygen, which transforms it into plain water.

However, the release of oxygen from the peroxide give it bleaching abilities and makes it a good tooth whitener. In addition, it causes the peroxide to benefit your oral health in other ways by killing anaerobic bacteria in your mouth that are responsible for releasing the sulfur compounds that cause bad breath.

To use hydrogen peroxide as a tooth whitener, you can dilute it with an equal amount of water and rinse as you would with traditional mouthwash, or you can combine it with baking soda to form a homemade toothpaste. If you choose to mix it with baking soda, be sure to brush gently. The abrasive consistency of baking soda can irritate sensitive gums and even scrub away tooth enamel if applied with too much force.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is considered to be beneficial because of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, the oil can help remove oil-based stains from your teeth. Coconut oil, which is a solid at room temperature, can be applied directly to your toothbrush bristles and used as a toothpaste. However, it can also be used for oil pulling.

Oil pulling involves placing about a spoon of the oil in your mouth and moving it about the oral cavity with the motion of your jaws. As the oil comes in contact with oral bacteria in your mouth, it traps the microbes, and they are discarded when you spit out the oil. The longer the oil is in your mouth, the greater the number of microbes that will be trapped. In addition, be sure to release the oil into a trash receptacle because it can clog your plumbing.
